What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?
I’m not sure you decide to be a entrepreneur I think it’s in you. My Dad was an entrepreneur and he would always encourage me but it wasn’t until I found my confidence that I decided (at the age of 26) that it was a great time for me. The recession had hit the UK in 2007 and I knew that if I could make it during this economic downpour then I’d have a good chance to make it after.
How long did it take for you to put your idea into action? What prompted you to act?
I attended a conference on a weekend, which was about entrepreneurship and how to start your own business; I went no expectations, but just to listen to some speakers that were successful. The conference mainly concentrated on ‘Confidence’ – And I had plenty of it so I just needed to take the plunge and see what I could achieve. I researched networking opportunities in London town and started to attend them after work slowly building my contacts and client base.
What has been your scariest moment as an entrepreneur?
Starting your own business is scary. There are highs and lows if you really care about your clients. For me the scariest moment when your lying in bed at night knowing how much you have to get done the next day or that week. That’s why It’s good to scheduling everything you do in your business so it doesn’t become over whelming. I want my clients to say good things about me so I usually go out of my way to make sure I give them a fantastic service every time.
What has been your proudest moment?
Oooh there’s been many… Not to blow my own trumpet but I’ve been taught (by my business coach) that we should award ourselves for our achievements. So I often set goals on a monthly basis so I am always pushing myself. Achievements could be anything from:
* Wining an Web Award in 2015 (hoping to do the same in 2017)
* Hitting monthly Invoicing targets
* Getting into Press
But to be honest I’m happy every time I launch a new website. It’s very rewarding.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned from founding your own company?
Get a coach, Get a good accountant! I’ve only been with my coach a couple of years but she pushes me every month to get me to where I want to be. Setting goals is so important but if you want to be taken seriously you got to know where you are going. Secondly… DO you have an accountant that will explain everything to you and give you the time that you need when you first start out? My account has to explain the simplest of tasks to me. He’s a keeper!
Has a mistake ever led you to success?
You could say that ‘Website in a Day’ came around because I used to sit with my clients sometimes to build websites. One client in particular said how much she enjoyed it and ‘Website in a Day’ was born a few weeks later.
Which women inspire you?
Hilary Rushford is my new favorite lady of the month. I’m currently doing her Instagram course and although she is a Fashion Stylist and I have no interest in that. I find her stories on Instagram inspiring as she talks about a lot of things that we all struggle with in business.
What one thing do you wish someone had told you when you first started out?
I wish someone told me that I am too cheap and to out my prices up sooner. We all have to test the waters in the beginning of our businesses and I think this is important but I definitely was too cheap for too long. This comes down to self worth and confidence though so I guess it’s all part of the journey.
