In today’s Her Business Story here at A League of Her Own we meet Samantha Haycock, the female founder behind BeYOUtiful Box, founded in 2016. Before starting BeYOUtiful Box, Samantha owned BeYOUtiful Life Services but wasn’t reaching the women she wanted to, so switched how she was working.
Samantha tell us more about BeYOUtiful Box
BeYOUtiful Box is a subscription box for women to promote self love. It contains 4-6 Canadian small business made products. After struggling for years with self hate, I wanted to bring self love to every woman. My tagline is… delivering self love to your doorstep.
Each month, you get a box delivered just for you.
What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?
It just happened. I have 3 kids and there are some weeks my husband works a lot of hours. He is the main financial provider do his job always came first. It was hard for me to keep a job with having the 3 kids at home and his schedule being uncertain at times. I am not a stay at home mom type. It’s not me and I just can’t do it. The idea for BeYOUtiful Box came to me while I was sleeping.
When I was back home visiting for Christmas in 2015, my cousin had asked me what I was doing. I’m from Wisconsin but moved to Canada in 2007 and it was my first time being home for Christmas. She said that she always thought I would be a public speaker or life coach. Once I got back to Canada in January, I started BeYOUtiful Life Services.
How long did it take for you to put your idea into action?
I hosted my first workshop in March 2016. I wasn’t reaching the women I wanted to so that is when BeYOUtiful Box was born. I posted on a local mom’s Facebook Group and asked if any small businesses were interested and the feedback I got was amazing. I delivered my first box on May 15, 2016. It contained all locally made products.
What has been your scariest moment as an entrepreneur?
I’m not sure if I have had scary moments. I have had moments of, what the hell am I thinking. Questioning if I am making a difference. I think that is something we all go through at one time or another. The doubt that creeps in can sometimes make you forget all the good you have done.
What has been your proudest moment?
My proudest moment…
I have 2. When for Christmas 2016, I sold over 50 boxes. That was a huge moment for me because up to that point I was between 10-12 boxes per month.
The 2nd would have to be when in September 2017, I did my first public speaking event. My son came with me because he loves to set up the table at events. After I was done and walking back to him, he ran up to me and gave me a high five. Then he told me that I did so good and that he was proud of me. That was the moment I knew that all my struggles and doubts were worth It!
What is the biggest lesson you have learned from founding your own company?
To ignore others. They wont see your vision like you do. You need to ignore the haters and continue down your own path. It’s the only way to be truly happy and successful.
What does success mean to you?
For me it means that I can make others smile. Show them that even though they don’t believe it at this moment in time, they are beautiful. I want to be their voice in times of doubt.
I also want to be able to teach and show my kids that anything is possible. If I can teach them That, I will have been successful.
Has a mistake ever led you to success?
Hmmmm well I guess for me it was opening up BeYOUtiful Life Services and letting it become BeYOUtiful Box.
Which women inspire you?
All women. The woman that struggles day in and day out and still gets up every day to create a life for herself and family. The everyday woman. That’s who I am.
And which men?
My husband. He is a hard worker and provides everything that we need. My dad who showed us that showing up for sports and concerts was the most important thing to him (and my mom).
What one thing do you wish someone had told you when you first started out?
Be true to yourself. No one can see what you envision your life and business to be.
What’s the best piece of business advice someone has ever given you?
Just put yourself out there. You will attract the people you are supposed to by being yourself.
